뜨거운 한여름이 시작된 6월, 어머니를 따라 명동밥집 봉사를 시작하였습니다. 당시에는 그저 무료 급식소에서 일손을 돕는 단순한 활동으로 생각했었습니다.

 

명동밥집에서의 첫 날이 아직도 기억에 생생합니다. 어떻게보면 저에게는 공식적인 첫 봉사활동이었기 때문입니다. 저에게 주어진 임무는 식사를 마친 분들의 식기류를 치우고 정리하는 일이었습니다. 그러다보니 명동밥집을 찾는 손님들, 즉 노숙인이나 홀몸노인들과 잠깐씩 마주하고 한두마디의 대화를 나누기도 하였습니다. 고마움이 베어 있는 이분들의 모습을 보며, 저는 ‘운 좋게’ 저에게 주어진 모든 것들에 대해 성찰해 보았고, 도움이 필요한 이들과 함께할 수 있도록 이러한 기회를 주신 하느님께 감사를 드리게 되었습니다.

 

처음 들어선 명동밥집에서 낯선 환경과 사람들을 마주한 그 순간, 한국어가 아직 서툴렀던 저는 이 공동체가 원하는, 꼭 맞는 사람이 되기에는 어렵겠다는 생각을 했습니다. 그러나 이 명동밥집의 활기와 따뜻한 온기, 더불어 특히 센터장인 김신부님을 비롯한 많은 신부님들의 배려와 돌봄으로 저는 이 공동체에 스며들 수 있었습니다. 그렇게 몇 달이 흐른 지금, 저는 명동밥집의 몇몇 단골 손님이 눈에 익혀졌고, 서로 자기 소개를 나누기도 하였습니다. 시간이 지날 수록 명동밥집에서 식사를 하시면서 건강해진 이분들의 모습은 저에게 놀라움 그 자체였고, 제가 이 곳에서의 봉사활동을 더 열심히 해야겠다는 동기가 되었습니다. 또한 명절이나 성탄 등 특별한 날에는 공연과 함께 이분들께 위생키트 등의 선물 꾸러미를 나누는 명동밥집의 모습은 저의 마음을 따뜻하게 만들었습니다.

 

오전 봉사가 마무리되는 1시 15분 경, 오후 봉사자들과 인수인계가 되는 그 시간은 제가 가장 좋아하는 시간입니다. 바로 백신부님의 맛있는 국을 먹을 수 있는, 오전 봉사자들의 점심 시간입니다. 명동밥집의 국은 국을 잘 먹지 않던 저에게 신세계를 열어주었습니다. 이제 저는 매주 어떤 국이 우리를 기다리고 있을지 궁금해하며 명동밥집으로 향하고 있습니다. ^^

I started volunteering for 명동밥집 amidst the hot summer of June following my mother. What was supposed to be a mere experience resulted in my weekly service to the soup kitchen.

 

I can still remember the first day of volunteering, I was extremely excited as this was the first official service opportunity that I had been allowed to participate in. On the first day, I was responsible for returning the empty trays to the sink and every time I would reach in to take their trays away, the short conversations that I had with the homeless with them expressing their gratitude allowed me to reflect on myself of how thankful I should be for being more ‘fortunate’ and how God provided me with this opportunity to serve the ones who are in need. 

 

When I first started volunteering, I was faced with an unfamiliar setting and individuals. In addition, with my Korean linguistic ability being somewhat limited, I had thought that it was going to be very difficult to ‘fit-in’ with the community. However, due to the cheerful environment of the soup kitchen, I was able to blend in smoothly especially with the help of the Director and the Fathers who took extensive care of me. As the volunteering progressed throughout a couple of months, I started to recognize some homeless individuals that I would see on a weekly basis. Although we hadn’t had an opportunity to share our names, the fact that I was able to see them every week healthy, put my heart at ease and was able to fully concentrate on volunteering. In addition, on most celebrated holidays, there are special stages being performed for the homeless in addition to them being given extra ‘presents’ that usually consist of sanitary kits.

 

With the voluntary shift ending at around 1:15 PM, upon rotation with the afternoon volunteers, another highlight of the soup kitchen would be having Father Baek’s flavorsome soup. Prior to volunteering, I wasn’t a big fan of soup but Father Baek’s soup introduced me to a whole new world of Korean soup. Now, every week, I head to the soup kitchen wondering what the soup menu would be. :)
